Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant promise. Every week, a new tool is announced, a new model is released, and a new headline tells school leaders that "AI will change everything." The question is no longer whether to use AI, it's how to do it well.
Below is a practical guide for the directors and academic leaders we work with.
1. Start with a problem, not a tool
The fastest way to lose teachers' trust is to introduce technology in search of a use case. Begin instead with a friction point that everyone agrees on: too many parent emails, slow grading, repetitive admissions paperwork. Then ask: can AI shave time off this without changing the educational outcome?
2. Free up teachers, don't replace them
The best AI deployments we've seen target the parts of a teacher's day they would happily delegate: drafting rubrics, summarising parent meetings, generating quiz variants. Teachers stay in charge of pedagogy and judgement. The model handles the typing.
3. Be honest with families
Parents want to know how their children's data is used. A short, plain-language note in the first week of term, what we use AI for, what we don't, who can see what, does more for trust than any policy document.
4. Pick partners that understand schools
Generic AI products optimise for everyone and serve no one. The tools that work in education come from teams who have spent time in real classrooms, who know what a substitute teacher needs at 7:55am, and who built compliance in from day one.
5. Measure, then expand
Pick one process. Run it for a term. Measure the time saved and the staff feedback. If it's a win, expand. If it isn't, drop it without ceremony. The schools that succeed treat AI like any other change: small experiments, honest reviews, careful scaling.
